For many women, urinary incontinence is simply due to the natural process of aging, including menopause. For others, it can be due to pregnancy and vaginal childbirth. When you urinate, contracting muscles force urine out of the bladder and into the urethra. At the same time, sphincter muscles around the urethra relax. This reaction releases the urine, allowing it to flow out of the body. Incontinence results when the muscles or nerves that release or retain urine are damaged or become weak.
The two most common forms of urinary incontinence are:
Stress incontinence is the most common form of UI. This type causes urine leakage during exertion or movements like coughing, laughing, sneezing, etc. The leading cause of stress UI is vaginal childbirth or menopause. Women with stress UI experience leakage when the tissues supporting the bladder stretch or weaken, allowing the bladder to exert downward pressure on the sphincter muscles that keep the urethra closed. This prevents the muscles from closing as tight as they need to retain urine properly during physical stress.
Urge incontinence refers to the sudden “urge” to urinate, often immediately followed by the involuntary loss of urine. This type of UI occurs when abnormal nerve signals cause muscles in the bladder to contract. Urinary retention is lost when the overactive bladder muscles overpower the sphincter muscles that close the urethra.
Pelvic floor exercises, commonly called Kegels, which strengthen the muscles and tissue that support the bladder, are the most prescribed treatment for improving urinary incontinence.
Lotti Aesthetics and Wellness offers a wide variety of UI solutions. The common treatment we use is the VTone, but we also offer FormaV and Morpheus8V. We use the following treatments to help treat and alleviate this common feminine concern:
VTone is an excellent incontinence treatment. It uses electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to rehabilitate weak pelvic floor muscles. During treatments, an applicator is gently inserted into the vagina, emitting energy waves stimulating and contracting the muscles. The treatment strengthens pelvic floor muscles, tightens the vagina, and reduces urinary incontinence.
We often recommend a series of VTone treatments every 2 weeks for a total of 6 sessions. Treatments only last about 30 minutes, require no downtime and are painless.
FormaV is a treatment commonly used for vaginal rejuvenation but also helps improve UI. Treatments improve internal tightness, circulation, and sensation. FormaV uses radiofrequency energy and localized heat, reaching layers of vaginal tissue and stimulating collagen and elastin—remodeling and tightening the tissues and increasing circulation.
Morpheus8V uses radiofrequency energy to induce collagen formation remodeling, causing tightening, thickening, and rejuvenation of the vaginal and vulvar tissue. Microneedling is commonly used on the face and body to boost collagen formation. The tiny, sterile needles create micro-injuries to the tissue, and the body produces more collagen and elastin.
The tightening action of Morpheus8V strengthens the anterior vaginal wall, which then lifts the bladder and urethra—resulting in dramatic improvements in incontinence.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) does not recommend using tampons for urinary incontinence. Sometimes, a tampon can be used to prevent leakage, like when exercising. However, pads are a good way to avoid leakage ruining your undergarments and clothes.
